mais frio que no espaço
Cern lab goes 'colder than space'
The Large Hadron Collider is entering the final stages of being lowered to a temperature of 1.9 Kelvin (-271C; -456F) - colder than deep space.
The LHC has thousands of magnets which will be maintained in this frigid condition using liquid helium.
The magnets are arranged in a ring that runs for 27km through the giant tunnel.
Once the LHC is operational, two particle beams - usually consisting of protons accelerated to high energies - will be fired down pipes running through the magnets.
These beams will then travel in opposite directions around the main ring at close to the speed of light.
At allotted points along the tunnel, the beams will cross paths, smashing into one another with cataclysmic force. Scientists hope to see new particles in the debris of these collisions, revealing fundamental new insights into the nature of the cosmos and how it came into being.
The most powerful physics experiment ever built, the LHC will re-create the conditions just after the Big Bang.

nanocenas e nanocoisas
Permitam-me um pouco mais de divulgação ao nível das nanociências e nanomateriais, mais uns pozinhos doutro tópico...
Num artigo já com um par de meses em cima, pode ler-se acerca do desenvolvimento de "cérebros" moleculares orgânicos:
The machine is made from 17 molecules of the chemical duroquinone. Each one is known as a "logic device".
They each resemble a ring with four protruding spokes that can be independently rotated to represent four different states.
One duroquinone molecule sits at the centre of a ring formed by the remaining 16. All are connected by chemical bonds, known as hydrogen bonds.
The state of the control molecule at the centre is switched by a scanning tunnelling microscope (STM).
Using the STM, the researchers showed they could change the central molecule's state and simultaneously switch the states of the surrounding 16.
The configuration allows four billion different possible combinations of outcome.

Carbon nanotubes are often thought to epitomise the nanotechnology industry.
However, the nanotubes show certain superficial similarities to other fibres, such as asbestos, which are known to cause harm and diseases including cancers.
In a series of experiments, the researchers injected different lengths of multi-walled nanotubes - which comprise two to 50 concentric cylinders - into the abdomen of mice.
"What we found was that the long nanotubes were pathogenic - they caused inflammation and scar formation. The short nanotubes were not," said Dr Donaldson.

Divulgação científica
Vamos lá começar 2008 tentando ser menos ignorantes. Vou mostrar-vos um blog. Um blog interessante. Chama-se De Rerum Natura, é um blog convidado do jornal PÚBLICO, escrito por um físico, um filósofo, uma pedagoga, um matemático, uma química, um biólogo e uma bióloga, além de outros convidados. Um ror de gente interessante.
Ocorreu-me falar disto porque, apesar de só dar uma vista de olhos de vez em quando, deparei-me com umas postas lá publicadas por um desses convidados, Luís Alcácer, explicando Mecânica Quântica de forma simples e sucinta. Ora como eu sei que a esmagadora maioria das pessoas sempre viveu absolutamente fascinada com a Mecânica Quântica, achei adequado. Para os poucos ainda na escuridão, fica aqui O Gato de Schrödinger para lerem.
